Documents after a banner marching project 2004-2007 brought together traces from an ongoing project of banner marches. The show was the first exhibition of the three-part dvd corner work, bringing together digital video and super 8 footage of marches undertaken in Melbourne, Sydney and Kellerberrin. The banner themselves, displayed in one 3-metre-long roll, and the dissembled banner marching frames, in the corner opposite, were exhibited in the same space.
The banner marching project’s structure developed alongside a process of collecting instances of the creation of national boundaries since 1901, in this exhibition produced as a stack of off-set printed broadsheet newspapers. This catalogue of boundaries, ordered by date, provided a mnemonic system for the banner marches. Each national boundary generated a line. This line provided a route for marching, so that each march traced a national boundary by its course through a given place. This catalogue of boundaries also generated an instruction-based score, produced collaboratively with the New York-based composer Andrew Byrne, performed in September 2006 by six singers and a percussionist at the VCA Margaret Lawrence Gallery. A recording of this performance was exhibited in the Ocular Lab kitchen, along with El Siglo (Lines towards another century), a reading of the same list of boundaries, translated into Spanish, originally broadcast on Señal 3 de la Victoria, Santiago, Chile, 5 and 6 October 2006, as part of the exhibition Transversa.
The work Fragments from a Sydney banner march is a 2-minute film, hand processed black and white super 8 transferred to digital video, comprising footage from a Sydney banner march in 2005 by Louise Curham.
